Flower Anatomy

Sarracenia flower

The flowers are usually the first sign of growth from the rhizome following the winter dormant period.

The flower structure is the same for all Sarracenia species, a single flower is produced for each stem, this may achieve a height of 60 cm or more depending upon the species and size of the plant.  As the flower begins to open the stem assumes the shape of a shepherds crook.

The structure of the flower consists of 5 sepals, above a style resembling an upside down umbrella and 5 petals.  The stamens and the ovary are located centrally beneath the sepals, whilst the stigma are located at each point of the umbrella.
